Prospect Watch: Jacob Heyward Rookie Baseball Cards, Giants

Jacob Heyward was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 18th round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft. His older brother, Jason, won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs last season so the expectations for this prospect have grown a bit.

At 6′-3″, 210 pounds this outfield prospect starred at the University of Miami before his draft year. His sophomore season was a breakout year. He hit .327, with four homers and 24 RBI in 56 games. He only started the last 17 games that season so he wasn’t a regular.

As a junior, in his draft year, he started all 64 games. He had six homers, 39 RBI, 10 doubles and a .403 on-base percentage. His .991 fielding percentage was the second best of any regular positional player. Something his brother has excelled at as well. His average dropped to .242 which is probably why he got drafted in the 18th round.

He’s currently in A-ball playing for the Augusta Green Jackets. In his first 258 at-bats he has 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 13 doubles and a .374 on-base percentage. His average is still low at .221 but the rest of the numbers are excellent. He’s been a run producer. He has 62 RBI in 107 career minor league games.

Here’s a look at a very exciting walk-off homer he hit with Miami:

Jacob Heyward’s first MLB licensed base card debuted in 2016 Bowman Draft Baseball.

His only autograph to date is his Chrome Prospect Autograph from 2017 Bowman Baseball.

Heyward has all the tools. However, his last name alone won’t help him move through a very talented Giants system. Each year he’s going to have to be one of the best players they have to try and make it to the big leagues in the next 3-4 years. He’s 21, he has time on his side.
